Con el casette llegó a los hogares del mundo un dispositivo económico. Los cassettes podían grabarse una y otra vez. Muy rápidamente la industria comenzó a fabricar aparatos que permitían reproducirlos y grabarlos en condiciones de alta fidelidad y comenzaron a competir en calidad con las engorrosas cintas de carrete abierto y con los mismos discos. Además, los cassettes tenían una gran ventaja: no se rayaban. A comienzos de los años 70 se desarrolló un sistema denominado Dolby, que a grandes rasgos consiste en aumentar las frecuencias altas durante la grabación para que escondan el siseo normal de una cinta magnetofónica y luego bajar esas frecuencias durante la reproducción para establecer la ecualización originar del tema musical. Cuando uno quería darle brillo a la audición apagaba el Dolby y le subía un poco a los bajos del amplificador.
